Areas with major electricity installations enjoy regular power supply

Despite the epileptic supply of electricity in the country, it might interest you to know that some areas still enjoy uninterrupted power supply that you wonder if these areas are still part of the country.About two-third areas of country suffer abject blackout with no hope of ever getting constant supply of electricity.
To mention but a few of these New york like areas are New Bussa in Niger state. Osogbo in Osun state, Agbara in Ogun state, Birnin Kebbi in Kebbi state Ijede in Lagos state, Aluu in Rivers state while areas like Ibadan, Ekiti, Aba, Choba, Warri, Surulere, Badagry and many more are in darkness. Infact the list is endless.
The irony of it all is that some of these areas in darkness are directly opposite or adjacent these areas with steady supply of electricity that you wonder again what is preventing the light from getting to them. Take for instance, Aluu and Choba towns in Rivers state are  directly opposite each other. Aluu enjoys steady electricity while Choba is in complete darkness. Similarly, Agbara and Badagry are adjacent each other but Agbara enjoys uninterrupted power supply while Badagry is in total blackout.
One peculair characteristic of these New york like areas is the presence of one major electricity installation or the other to their advantage.
Osogbo for instance habors the GRID system. The GRID is a major power installation that connects all major generating stations and the load center. Osogbo enjoys steady supply of electricity as a result of this.
Similarly, Kainji dam is situated in New Bussa. Kainji dam is the nation’s number one hydro-elecric generating station. New Bussa is the only town in Nigeria that enjoys electricity almost round the clock, courtesy Kainji dam.
Birnin Kebbi  has one of the nation’s largest transimission stations. This stations is used to export power to countries like Niger Republic and others. Kebbi enjoys steady electricity as a result of this transimission station.
Also, Ijede in Ikorodu axis of Lagos state host the famous Egbin thermal station which contributes massively to the electricity requirement of the nation. Ijede enjoys stable electricity due to the presence of Egbin in its vinicity.
Agbara too has an injection station that caters for the industrial power needs of the area. This inturn benefits the Agbara town and environs. Electricity is remarkably stable at Agbara.

The menace of vandalizing telecommunications infrastructure

According to Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, "Vandalism is the crime of deliberately damaging things, especially public property. Though the dictionary defines Vandalism as a deliberate act, it can also be rightly said that Vandalism can be an in-deliberate act as we would realize in the course of this article.
Vandalism of telecoms installations has become a frequent occurrence in the nation today and this is very disheartening. Vandalism of telecoms infrastructure can be a deliberate or in-deliberate act as the case may be.
Deliberate Vandalism of telecoms equipment is most at times as a result of hoodlum's activities in the area. This is very rampant in the North eastern part of the country where the Boko Haram insurgency thrives. A lot of Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) had been vandalized or more rightly put, destroyed due to terrorist activities in these areas. This has led to unavoidable communications hitches such drop calls, no network coverage e.t.c. in these locations. Telecoms companies wallow in pains as they count their losses whenever their equipment are destroyed by terrorist.
Telecoms operators lose millions of naira to Vandal's activities which affects the quality of service delivery and a lot of money is spent to resuscitate damaged equipment.
About N24,750,000 is expended during the installation of a Base Transceiver Station (BTS) together with its towers, special antennas and two generators to power the station. So whenever a Base Transceiver Station  (BTS) is destroyed, it can be imagined what the telecoms company has lost.
In-deliberate Vandalism on the other hand occurs as a result of construction work around areas where  telecoms installations are present. A very good example is during the construction of roads in areas where fibre optic cables are laid. This can lead to cable cut resulting in telecommunications breakdown.
It is on record that an average of 70 fibre optic cables are cut on  a monthly bases due to construction work across Nigeria.
MTN in particular said due to fibre optic cable cut, it had lost of network signal in about 1000 base station across the country recently.
Therefore telecoms companies are appealing to the general public to be vigilante and report any suspicious activities around telecoms installations.

The new face of doing business in Nigeria

Before now, doing business in Nigeria required a brick and mortar location whereby the business owner had to always be ground in order not to miss potential customers. There was slow growth in business because businesses could only reach out to limited numbers people within their locality. Becoming a national or international business man was a herculean task and dynamism in business could never be accomplished.
But since telecommunications became firmly anchored in Nigeria, the face of doing business changed. A brick and mortar location is no longer mandatory. In fact, for many people, their mobile phones is their office. Just a phone call had transformed many Nigerians into millionaires. Now, business owners can organize their businesses in such a way that anywhere they find themselves their businesses are with them. Making international connections are very easy now. Many businesses in Nigeria now have foreign partnership which is very good for the rapid growth of the business.
ICT has also opened up opportunities for Nigerians to venture into online businesses. Quite a number of Nigerians now earn decent income from online shopping malls, facebook, blogging, survey, freelancer, whatapps, email marketing, SEO, copy writing etc. Many Nigerians are using online means to grow their offline businesses through promoting their products and services online with the aid of online web banners.

Certain things that must be corrected to achieve a blackout free Nigeria

Yes, raising megawatts does improve electricity supply but it does not guarantee uninterrupted power supply to the common man. There are other activities that hamper the free flow of electricity supply that must be checkmated if the common man would ever enjoy uninterrupted power supply in this country.
Government needs to beam its search light on these activities and address them on time because as little as they are or may sound, they contribute a great deal in frustrating government effort in providing uninterrupted power supply to her citizenry.
Take for instance the activities of generator merchants in the country whose activities always tend towards hindering the actualization of darkness-free Nigeria. As far as they are concerned, if electricity works then they would be out of business. Therefore, not until these merchants find an alternative business that is as lucrative as generator business, they will ever remain stumbling blocks to whatever effort government making to save the country from blackout.
Other businesses that go hand-in-hand with generator business like diesel and pms dealers, generator repairers, engine oil, torchlight, candle, lantern sellers are all repulsive to darkness-free Nigeria.
Furthermore, talking about the nefarious activities of the very PHCN officials or whatever they call themselves now. They go about tampering with electricity installations such as removing cut-out fuses from transformers in order to be bribed by local consumers before they can enjoy electricity supply.
What about the activities of vandals. Unemployment has turned many of our youths into vandals. They move from places to places vandalizing electricity installations like transformers, high tension cables, electrical poles etc. Not until government addresses the issue of unemployment which would in turn solve the problem vandalism, vandals would continue sabotage government effort in ensuring uninterrupted power supply to her citizenry.

Is solid minerals exploration capable of diversifying Nigeria's economy?

There had been so much talk about diversifying the Nigerian economy since crude oil price has fallen drastically in the international market. This development has affected the economy and brouhght untold hardship on the citizenry. One of the ways the present day government is looking at to diversify the economy is through solid mineral exploration. This is why the ministry of solid minerals has been on its toes, working tirelessly to come out with a solid minral that can serve as replacement for crude oil.
Can this really work? These solid minerals are they really in abundance? Abundant enough to satisfy us as well as as the international market. Remember, crude oil is found in the Niger delta wshich is almost an entire region comprising of Eight states namely Ondo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa-ibom, Cross river and Abia states. In these regions, crude oil is found both onshore and offshore.  Thus, it is abundant enough to cater for our energy needs as well as for exportation.
Solid minerals in the country are found in individual states. For instance, coal is found in Enugu, Tin in Jos plateau, Gold in Osun, salt in Nassarawa e.t.c. Non of these solid minerals expanse an entire region or Geo-political zone of the country. Only very few of them are really in abundance to earn foreign exchange.
Previous dispensations were aware of these solid minerals but never thought of exploring them because it would be futile effort. Let the truth be told! The only viable means of diversifying the economy is through agriculture.

Rain! rain!! rain!!!

The raining season has finally unwound. Flooding, ill health, thunder and lightning are integral parts of the season. People living in flood prone areas are advised to relocate before it is too late. The numbers of mosquitoes triple during the raining season. So, therefore, it is paramount to guard against the usual mosquito health havoc. This is the time to eradicate all mosquito breeding agents which can be achieved by keeping our surrounds clean, cleaning all drainage and clearing the bushes around us.    Also, it is paramount to guard against thunder and lightning unforeseen destruction. Every home, office, school, business organization should endeavor to install appropriate lightning protection gadget that can withstand thunder strike which can cause damage to vital electrical appliances, result in electrocution and cause network failure that can disrupt smooth flow of business transactions.
This lightning protection gadget acts as a neutralizer which conducts lightning discharges to earth through a safe path to avoid damages, disperses the lightning current into the ground quickly and safely and avoid secondary effect lightning on the environment in the form of high voltages which can cause destruction of electrical appliances.
Although, lightning is a natural occurrence that we have no control over, therefore, precautionary measures can be taken to prevent it from causing severe havoc to lives and properties. Statistics has shown that more than 2000 people die across the world as a result of lightning attack while survivors are badly injured and suffer from a variety of lasting symptoms.
Therefore in order not to fall victim at this season to thunder strike, we must take the installation of this lightning protection gadget in our homes, offices, schools, organizations e.t.c, a priority.
