The consequences of mobile phone addiction

Mobile Phone addiction is fast becoming a gigantic societal menace. It accounts for the largest non drug addictions situations encountered in the society today.
Many youths today derive sole companionship from their mobile phones and affirm that with their mobile phones, they can never be bored. Thus, they shy away from physical relationships and contacts with family and friends. They are always engaged in one thing or the other with their mobile phones throughout the day. Chatting, watching videos, listen to music, gaming, surfing social media networks, phone calls, sending sms e.t.c are but a few activities they engage in with their mobile phones which is gradually becoming propensities.
Even though big players in the mobile phone industry deny the fact that mobile phones emits harmful electromagnetic radiations, researches have confirmed that prolonged use of mobile phones poses severe health threat to the user.
Health conditions such as brain tumors, genetic damage, headaches, earaches, blurred vision, sleep disorders e.t.c may arise as a result of prolonged contact with mobile phones. Experts advice that to reduce the risk of mobile phones health hazard, prolonged use of phones either for calls or browsing should be discouraged, sleeping with mobile phones under the pillows or close to any of your body parts should be avoided, placing phones in breast pockets should be prohibited.
These precautionary measures should be adhere to strictly by every phone user because some of the aforementioned health conditions could lead to acute situations such as blindness, cancer, deafness and even instant death in some cases.
The propensity to remain connected to world 24/7, 365 days should be minimized by all and sundry, so that we do not find ourselves in the condition popular referred to as medical one chance.

Where is the civilization in Lagos?

Whenever strangers from within the country visit Lagos, immediately they see a society that is enveloped by the darkness. Everything they experience, observe and see seems to be upside down and chaotic. They lament, how could human beings adapt to such a life of hell without any out roar of being fed up. Just like the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti would say, “suffering and smiling.” That is the best description for the life in Lagos.
If fellow Nigerians from other states could feel this way about Lagos, then how much more strangers from outside the country. They would feel like running back after experiencing just a day in Lagos. This is one key reason preventing investors from coming into the country. Lagos is the first point of call to any investor willing to invest in the country. Nobody would want to invest in a society that is not working, upside down and chaotic. Civilization is so far away from Lagos. But to Lagosians, in fact, they are the most civilized people in the world; every other person is uncivilized. Just like a mad man who feels he is sane and everybody around him is insane. Lagosians do the wrong things in place of the right things. And when they see you trying to do the right thing, they think you are abnormal. They would even rein abuses on you saying, “don’t you know that this is Lagos?” You are not sharp; you are not smart etc; Just because you are trying to do the right thing. The story of many visitors in Lagos has been, ‘if you cannot beat them, then join them.’ So, within few days a visitor in Lagos has adapted to this life of hell and already behaving like other Lagosians.
Bookmakers describe Lagos as the second worst city to live in the world. Why would it not be; with all the uncivilized activities putting the state among the blacklisted cities of the world? Activities such as:
·         Smuggling of contraband commodities such as rice, vegetable oil, frozen turkey and chicken.
·         Begging and street hawking in every nook and cranny of the city.
·         Bribery and corruption experienced by transporters in the hands of Police, Road safety and Agberos.
.    Bus conductors hanging by the door instead of reserving a seat for himself
·         Lawlessness
·         Pollution from noise, vehicle exhaust, generators and company machinery.
·         Breaking of traffic rules by motorists.
·         Massive traffic jam everywhere in the state.
·         Armed robbery, kidnapping, ritual killings, scamming, drug trafficking, child trafficking by residence.
·         Bad roads and poor drainages leading to flooding whenever it rains.
·         Erratic power supply
·         Congestion, confusion and disorderliness. One can go on and on.
In a civilized state, all these shameful activities can never happen. Have we not seen the organization
and orderliness in other cities of the world. Why can't we borrow a leaf from them?
If we do not pay cognizance attention to these things and find a long lasting solution to them, then the so much talked about CHANGE would be a word said in the wind. Let us all CHANGE from within.
CHANGE begins with me!

Internet composition

The internet is built around four fundamental services namely: Mail service, Telnet (Telecommunications network), FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and Client/server facility.

Mail service: The introduction of mail service on the internet is one service that made the internet popular. One of the commonest thing that bring people online is checking of mails. Internet mail service has over shadowed the conventional posting of letters which can take days to arrive its destination. With internet mail service, message is sent from one email address to another with arrival at the destination email almost instantly.
2.
Telnet: A short representation for Telecommunications network. It allows one to create a terminal session with a remote computer. Using Telnet, one can login to a remote host computer at the other end of the world. One can access the computer the conventional way whenever a connection is established. However, login details of the remote computer must be made available and this automatically makes one the administrator to the remote computer at that end. Telnet also allows two programs to work hand  in hand by exchanging data over the internet.
3.
FTP: It stands for File Transfer Protocol. It enables transfer of files from one computer to another. FTP makes it possible to transfer file from a  remote host to your computer, transfer files from your computer to a remote host computer or transfer files from one remote host to another. Technically, these three processes are referred to as downloading, uploading and file copying.

Client/server facility: whenever two or more computers want to access the internet at the same time, they can be connected using the client/server system of networking. The server connects directly to the internet and send packets to other computers that are referred to as clients. The computers in this network set up are also able to share network resources like files, printers e.t.c.

Very correct

Here is a question asked Mr. Taiyu Kobayashi; Fujistu founder in 1979. I wasn’t even born then. As at then, the structure of a computer was so gigantic that it could occupy an entire building.

Question: “How do you foresee the future evolution of computers and your subsequent position as a computer manufacturer?”

Answer: “We will see a significant reduction in the size of computers. They’ll be small enough for a businessman to carry in his briefcase. They’ll cost less, too. But software will be more expensive. Eventually, the software developer will be in a position of trust and respect, just like a lawyer, or any other highly skilled professional, with his own “practice.” Hopefully, these people will be honest.”
Is this not the position of computers and software developers today? As computer not become so small that you can even put it in your pocket? As computer not become so cheap and available for everyone? Are software developers like Bill GatesSteve JobsMark Zuckerberg etc not respected all over the world today?
This is really a point of reflection for everyone never to look down on any profession.

Various ATM irregularities experienced by bank customers

The ATM card technology when it started was a perfect replacement for the manual cash withdrawal and transfer in the banking hall. Though, at the initial stage, majority of the populace were skeptical about it because of the widespread rumors about electronic card transaction fraud. Many did not buy the idea but as time progressed, people started realizing the benefits of this wonderful ICT technology. It has proved to be faster, reliable and stress free means of cash withdrawals and transfers, given card holders the privilege to withdraw and transfer money at any time. Even at night! Some even collect deposit, taken electronic transaction system to the next level. It can also be used for online transactions as well as POS transactions.
Statistics show that the population of people using ATM has grown from 10% in 2008 to 70% in 2017, though many are yet to embrace the technology.
Just as every new innovation that start with a good and promising beginning in the country, only to decline drastically after a period of time, the ATM card technology story in Nigeria is also not different.
Lately, there had been irregularities in the quality of service rendered by ATMs of almost all the financial institutions in Nigeria. The use of obsolete ATMs and slow servers by most of the banks has really really hampered the smooth flow of e-transactions. Most banks ATM outlets are characterized by long queues because of inadequate ATMs. Therefore, rendering the very essence of this technology useless. ATMs were designed for fast, efficient and stress free transactions. Today there seems to be no difference between cash withdrawal manually and the use of ATMs in terms of quickness of transaction.
Network fluctuations and failure has made the whole situation even worse. The frequency of out of service can be very alarming. Sometimes, customers wait under the sun and rain for service to return. Sometimes it can take up 30 minutes before service is finally restored. Many a time, the ATM debits you without dispensing cash. The reversal of this situation is sometimes immediate and it could also take up to 24hrs at times before the reversal is done. In extreme cases, it might require the affected customer going to the banking to complain before the reversal is carried out. This slows down the entire process making it tiresome and stressful. Many a time, a financial institution might not be available. Customers of such financial institutions get highly disappointed and frustrated whenever such message displays. This could disrupt their financial plan for that day and can be very painful.
Other problems encountered by customers include: Card seizure by machine, temporarily unable to dispense cash, insufficient funds even when customers have enough balance in their account etc.
Delay of card issuance by some financial institutions is also a cause to worry about. Customers being unable to get their cards after 3 months of application is unreasonable. Kudos to those banks that have embraced the instant issuance technology.
More so, some banks engage in auto renewal of ATM cards after expiry at the customers branch without putting into consideration that customers might relocate some where else distant from their branch. This act has deprived many the benefit of engaging in transactions using ATMs. This act should be frowned at with all vigor.

It gladdens my heart when ever am permitted to share the surface, faint and minute knowledge that have about ICT with the rest of the world.
