Can solid mineral exploration really diversify the Nigerian economy?

There had been so much talk about diversifying the Nigerian economy since crude oil price has fallen drastically in the international market. This development has affected the economy and brouhght untold hardship on the citizenry. One of the ways the present day government is looking at to diversify the economy is through solid mineral exploration. This is why the ministry of solid minerals has been on its toes, working tirelessly to come out with a solid minral that can serve as replacement for crude oil.
Can this really work? These solid minerals are they really in abundance? Abundant enough to satisfy us as well as as the international market. Remember, crude oil is found in the Niger delta wshich is almost an entire region comprising of Eight states namely Ondo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa-ibom, Cross river and Abia states. In these regions, crude oil is found both onshore and offshore.  Thus, it is abundant enough to cater for our energy needs as well as for exportation.
Solid minerals in the country are found in individual states. For instance, coal is found in Enugu, Tin in Jos plateau, Gold in Osun, salt in Nassarawa e.t.c. Non of these solid minerals expanse an entire region or Geo-political zone of the country. Only very few of them are really in abundance to earn foreign exchange.
Previous dispensations were aware of these solid minerals but never thought of exploring them because it would be futile effort. Let the truth be told! The only viable means of diversifying the economy is through agriculture.

Poor Delivery of service by Bank ATMs

The ATM card technology when it started was a perfect replacement for the manual cash withdrawal and transfer in the banking hall. Though, at the initial stage, majority of the populace were skeptical about it because of the widespread rumors about electronic card transaction fraud. Many did not buy the idea but as time progressed, people started realizing the benefits of this wonderful technology. It has proved to be faster, reliable and stress free means of cash withdrawals and transfers, given card holders the privilege to withdraw and transfer money at any time. Even at night! Some even collect deposit, taken electronic transaction system to the next level. It can also be used for online transactions as well as POS transactions.
Statistics show that the population of people using ATM has grown from 10% in 2008 to 65% in 2016 though many are yet to embrace the technology.
Just as every new innovation that start with a good and promising beginning in the country, only to decline drastically after a period of time, the ATM card technology story in Nigeria is also not different.
Lately, there had been irregularities in the quality of service rendered by ATMs of almost all the financial institutions in Nigeria. The use of obsolete ATMs and slow servers by most of the banks has really really hampered the smooth flow of e-transactions. Most banks ATM outlets are characterized by long queues because of inadequate ATMs. Therefore rendering the very essence of this technology useless. ATMs were designed for fast, efficient and stress free transactions. Today there seems to be no difference between cash withdrawal manually and the use of ATMs in terms of quickness of transaction.
Network fluctuations and failure has made the whole situation even worse. The frequency of out of service can be very alarming. This slows down the entire process making it tiresome and stressful. Sometimes customers wait under the sun and rain for service to return. Sometimes it can take up 30 minutes before service is finally restored. Many a time, a financial institution might not be available. Customers of such financial institutions get highly disappointed and frustrated whenever such message displays. This could disrupt their financial plan for that day and can be very painful.
Other problems encountered by customers include: Card seizure by machine, temporarily unable to dispense cash, insufficient funds even when customers have enough balance in their account, debiting a customer without dispensing cash e.t.c.
Delay of card issuance by some financial institutions is also a cause to worry about. Customers being unable to get their cards after 3 months of application is unreasonable. Kudos to those banks that have embraced the instant issuance technology.
More so, some banks engage in auto renewal of ATM cards after expiry at the customers branch without putting into consideration that customers might relocate some where else distant from their branch. This act has deprived many the benefit of engaging in transactions using ATMs. This act should be frowned at with all vigor.

Adding more words to English language through ICT

If you find yourself in the ICT  career and business of today, you must be ready to acquaint yourself with  lots of abbreviations and terminologies. ICT study and profession is characterized by uncountable abbreviations and terminologies which is currently changing the face of the English dictionary. Some words like delete, signin, signout, logout, login, signup e.t.c can now be found in the contemprorary English dictionary of today because of ICT. They were not in the English dictionary before. Even the name ICT is an abbreviation meaning Information and Communications Technology. So from its title to the minutest topic in ICT contains all sorts of abbreviations and terminologies.
In my own opinion, I think we ICT professionals need an acronym and ICT terminologies compilation book in form of an encyclopaedia  that we could visit from time to time for better understanding of some ICT concepts..
To mention but a few ICT abbreviations and terminologies are DHCP(Dynamic Host Configuration protocol), IP(Internet Protocol) TCP(Transmission Configuration Protocol), SEO(Search Engine Optimization) OSI(Open System Internetwork), IOS(Internetwork Operating System), TELNET(Telecommunications Network), HTTP(Hypertext Transfer Protocol) WAMP SERVER(Windows, Apache, MySQL, PHP), ITIL(IT Infrastructural Library), SQL(Structural Querry Language), PHP(Hypertext Preprocessor), HTML(Hypertext Mark up Language), WI FI(Wireless Fidelity), ARP(Address Resolution Protocol), RJ 45(Register Jack 45), CCNA(Cisco Certified Network Associate), IoTs(Internet of Things) BTS(Base Transceiver Station), FAQ(Frequently Asked Questions), UTP(Unshielded Twisted Pair), LAN(Local Area Network), WLAN(Wide Area Network), IDE(Integrated Device Electronics), SATA(Serial Advance Technology), RSS (Really Simple Syndication), URL (Uniform Resource Locator) e.t.c. The list is vast and unlimited. More and more ICT advancement continue to roll out everyday leading to a continuous increase in the number of ICT abbreviations. Definitely there is going to be no end to ICT abbreviations because a lot of discoveries are yet to be uncovered in the ICT world.
ICT has made the world a better place for everyone and will continue to change the face of the world. Now the world is talking about internet of things(IoTs) as the next big thing to happen in the ICT arena. Internet of things(IoTs) would be powered effectively by the 5G technology of which researchers say by the year 2020 would become a reality.

Information technology companies that stand out

The Information technology industry encompasses a broad spectrum of products and services that has made tremendous impact on the human race, thus, making the world a better place. Information technology has aided the development of a wide range of products and services that has revolutionize the world. Many of these products and services have become part and parcel of human existence that we wonder what would have become of the world today, were it not for information technology. The world is a global village today because of information technology. Just as the saying goes, "if you are not informed then you will be deformed". That means, the advent of information technology has averted an impending chronic deformity that the human race would have suffered if the likes of Abacus, Bill gates, Jon Ponstel, Steve Jobs e.t.c had not worked tirelessly to make information technology what it is today. Many human endeavors that would have taken years of rigorous work to achieve can be accomplished within a twinkle of an eye with the help of information technology.
The advent of information technology also presented opportunities for many companies to come into lime light. With these companies having the choice to tap into the various aspects of information technology such as software development, hardware production, telecommunications services, website development, management and coding e.t.c. The beautiful thing about these various aspects of information technology is that they are interwoven. The software needs the hardware to function and vice-versa. Also, the software and the hardware needs to communicate to give rise to products, services or functionality that benefits the end user.
However, taken time out to identity with some these companies that have really really distinguished themelves in their self chosen aspects of infomation technology. For instance in the software development domain, companies like:
Microsoft
Apple
Oracle
Android from Google
Fire fox e.t.c  have really really distinguish themselves
In Hardware productions, companies like:
Dell
HP
Nokia
Samsung
LG (Life is Good)
RIM (Research in Motion)
Toshiba
Lenovo
Apple e.t.c have made good names for themselves
Also, in Website development, management and coding, firms like:
Google
Facebook
Yahoo
Twitter
Bing e.t.c have built good reputation for themselves over the years
Likewise in telecomunications services, companies like:
Orange
MTN (Mobile Telecommunications Network)
Airtel
Etisalat
Areeba e.t.c have  carved out a niche for themselves.

Uneven supply of electrical power in Nigeria

Despite the epileptic  electricity situation of the nation, it might interest you to know that some areas still enjoy uninterrupted power supply that you wonder if these areas are still part of the country.About two-third areas of country suffer abject blackout with no hope of ever getting constant supply of electricity.
To mention but a few of these New york like areas are New Bussa in Niger state. Osogbo in Osun state, Agbara in Ogun state, Birnin Kebbi in Kebbi state Ijede in Lagos state, Aluu in Rivers state while areas like Ibadan, Ekiti, Aba, Choba, Warri, Surulere, Badagry and many more are in darkness. Infact the list is endless.
The irony of it all is that some of these areas in darkness are directly opposite or adjacent these areas with steady supply of electricity that you wonder again what is preventing the light from getting to them. Take for instance, Aluu and Choba towns in Rivers state are  directly opposite each other. Aluu enjoys steady electricity while Choba is in complete darkness. Similarly, Agbara and Badagry are adjacent each other but Agbara enjoys uninterrupted power supply while Badagry is in total blackout.
One peculair characteristic of these New york like areas is the presence of one electricity installation or the other to their advantage.
Osogbo for instance habors the GRID system. The GRID is a major power installation that connects all major generating stations and the load center. Osogbo enjoys steady supply of electricity as a result of this.
Similarly, Kainji dam is situated in New Bussa. Kainji dam is the nation’s number one hydro-elecric generating station. New Bussa is the only town in Nigeria that enjoys electricity almost round the clock, courtesy Kainji dam.
Birnin Kebbi  has one the nation’s largest transimission stations. This stations is used to export power to countries like Niger Republic and others. Kebbi enjoys steady electricity as a result of this transimission station.
Also, Ijede in Ikorodu axis of Lagos state host the famous Egbin thermal station which contributes massively to the electricity requirement of the nation. Ijede enjoys stable electricity due to the presence of Egbin in its vinicity.
Agbara too has an injection station that caters for the industrial power needs of the area. This inturn benefits the Agbara town and environs. Electricity is remarkably stable at Agbara.

Guard against thunder and lightning destruction

The raining season is here again! Thunder and lightning are an integral part of the season. So therefore, it is paramount to guard against thunder and lightning unforeseen destruction. Every home, office, school, business organization should endeavor to install appropriate lightning protection gadget that can withstand thunder strike which can cause damage to vital electrical appliances, result in electrocution and cause network failure that can disrupt smooth flow of business transactions.
This lightning protection gadget acts as a neutralizer which conducts lightning discharges to earth through a safe path to avoid damages, disperses the lightning current into the ground quickly and safely and avoid secondary effect lightning on the environment in the form of high voltages which can cause destruction of electrical appliances.
Although, lightning is a natural occurrence that we have no control over, therefore, precautionary measures can be taken to prevent it from causing severe havoc to lives and properties. Statistics has shown that more than 2000 people die across the world as a result of lightning attack while survivors are badly injured and suffer from a variety of lasting symptoms.
Therefore in order not to fall victim at this season to thunder strike, we must take the installation of this lightning protection gadget in our homes, offices, schools, organizations e.t.c, a priority.

G.S.M foundation in Nigeria is as solid as a rock

How time flies? It is already 15 years of the introduction of G.S.M communications in Nigeria. It was like yesterday when in 2001 the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) auctioned Digital Mobile Licenses which led to the birth of three mobile operators in the country. They are Econet wireless, now Airtel Nigeria, MTN and Mtel. Then came a fourth license in 2002 which brought Globacom Nigeria into limelight. Globacom was tagged as second national carrier to strengthen and increase the telecoms backbone infrastructure in the country.
When we thought it was all over, a fifth Digital Mobile License was issued to telecommunications giant from the middle east, Etisalat in 2008. Many saw Etisalat’s entry into the Nigeria market as rather late and wonder how its was going to catch with its already established counterparts. But Etisalat succeeded in proofing everybody wrong as it continued to grow from strength to strength attracting its own loyal customers. One fascinating quality of Etisalat which has been instrumental to it success is its ability to roll out unique offers and promos.
This past 15 years has been very eventful in the country’s telecommunications industry. G.S.M communications has redefined standards in the country. Unlike in the past, where telecommunications was reserved strictly for only the rich and wealthy in the society. Today, virtually all and sundry own a phone in the country. Even primary and secondary school pupils now parade phones of various types.
The telecommunications industry also gave a face lift to the Nigerian labor market by creating jobs for the teaming population of unemployed youths in the country. Also professionals from other walks of life switch over to the telecoms sector as operators offer mouth watering salaries that in some cases are better than those in the banking and oil and gas sectors.
Mobile phones too have evolved over the years from simple  Nokia 3310 to more sophisticated android, windows and Blackberry phones carrying higher functionality like camera, radio, internet connection e.t.c

Basic formation of the internet

The internet is built around four fundamental services namely: Mail service, Telnet (Telecommunications network), FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and Client/server facility.

Mail service: The introduction of mail service on the internet is one service that made the internet popular. One of the commonest thing that bring people online is checking of mails. Internet mail service has over shadowed the conventional posting of letters which can take days to arrive its destination. With internet mail service, message is sent from one email address to another with arrival at the destination email almost instantly.
2.
Telnet: A short representation for Telecommunications network. It allows one to create a terminal session with a remote computer. Using Telnet, one can login to a remote host computer at the other end of the world. One can access the computer the conventional way whenever a connection is established. However, login details of the remote computer must be made available and this automatically makes one the administrator to the remote computer at that end. Telnet also allows two programs to work hand  in hand by exchanging data over the internet.
3.
FTP: It stands for File Transfer Protocol. It enables transfer of files from one computer to another. FTP makes it possible to transfer file from a  remote host to your computer, transfer files from your computer to a remote host computer or transfer files from one remote host to another. Technically, these three processes are referred to as downloading, uploading and file copying.

Client/server facility: whenever two or more computers want to access the internet at the same time, they can be connected using the client/server system of networking. The server connects directly to the internet and send packets to other computers that are referred to as clients. The computers in this network set up are also able to share network resources like files, printers e.t.c.

Telecommunications evolution in Nigeria and future expectations

The telecommunications industry in Nigeria has come a long way in a short while and is not relenting on its effort in bringing forth to the table quality and improved voice and data services to the consumer's delight. The telecommunications industry in Nigeria has evolved tremendously. If we look back at the days of NITEL where analog communications was predominant with only a few hundred thousandth people having access to telecommunications facilities and now to the more vibrant digital telecommunications which offers millions of Nigeria access to telecommunications networks. Gone are the days when telephoning was meant strictly for the rich. Today everyone has a right to communicate and to be communicated to on phone.
Presently broadband penetration in Nigeria is put at 20% and bookmakers say come 2018 Nigeria would witness up to 30% broadband penetration.
Telecommunications experts say the future communications lies in data telecommunications. As such, researches are on going underground in this regards to improve the face of data communications. From the initial simple 2G networks, data communication has evolved to a faster 3G technology and now to the ever sophisticated 4G networks. Experts say the best is yet to come as researches are already on going into the 5G technology which researchers say would become a reality come 2020.
With a long list of expectations when this technology finally kicks off, there is no doubt that 5G networks would bring about a revolution in telecommunications industry of the world. It would be the major driving force of the much talk about about internet of things (IoTs) i.e objects possessing network connectivity as well has humans. On the surface we have seen a little of what internet of things (IoTs) can do with the invention and demonstration of self driven cars powered solely by internet of things (IoTs). Experts proclaim that even greater innovations and inventions would rock this epoch when the 5G technology is finally actualized. Bookmakers see internet of things (IoTs) as the next big thing that would change the face of the earth.

Telecommunications:Can we really live without it today?

Today, one is tempted to say that the basic needs of life are food, clothes, shelter and telecommunications. Yes , this is because telecommunications has become an integral part of our lives that we cannot do without. Many would say, ‘without my mobile device or Pc I fill empty and not in the world.’ Others lament, ‘how have we been living in time past without telecommunications?’ A very true question indeed because today telecommunications affects all aspect of our lives from business, work, economy, politics, health, transportation, transaction, relationship to pleasure, love, hobby, networking e.t.c.
A school of thought even regards the internet as one of man’s greatest inventions.  This is a statement of fact because the internet  offers everything you can think of. It has made telecommunications become a need and necessity that we cannot do without. Before, telecommunications was predominantly voice communications until the advent of the internet which brought about a more robust method of communications called data communications.  As it were, data communications has revolutionize the telecommunications industry of the world. Data communications has transformed telecommunications into a basic need life with its vastness, converting farness to nearness thus making the world a global village.

Reasons other ICT devices cannot replace computer

Many devices that perform similar functions like the computer have been developed over the years. The likes of tablets, iphones, smartphones, ipads e.t.c  are competing favorably and threatening to give the computer a run for its money. But, one powerful and unique functionality of the computer that has made it unique, outstanding and unbeatable amongst them is its editing quality. Most of these devices cannot be used to edit documents especially scanned documents. They can only be used to view these documents.  Scanned documents come in various format like pdf, doc, jpeg, png e.t.c
Only computer can edit scanned documents as well as movie, music, video and picture files. Just this single function has made the computer a superior device to all other ICT devices in its category.

Also, computer remains the best device for typing. It gives room for improvement on speed and typing skill of the user. A good number of applications can also be installed in a computer to teach how to become a good typist. The likes of Mavis Beacon and others could be explored. It is only when you can type effectively on a computer that you can regard yourself as a typist. Other ICT devices like phones, tablets, ipad e.t.c though have keypads but cannot be used for effective and voluminous typing.

The computer also accept connections to a wide range of peripheral devices like printers, scanners, embossing machines, cameras, flash disk e.t.c. Communication is established by interfacing these devices with the computer aided by a software application. Other ICT devices can only accept connection to a few peripheral devices.

Lastly, ICT devices like smartphones, tablets, ipads e.t.c can be used for personal use only. While computer satisfies both personal and public usage. Computers can be used in offices, schools, market places, companies e.t.c accommodating a wide of users and handlers.

Mobile phones too have evolved over the years from simple  Nokia 3310 to more sophisticated android, windows and Blackberry phones carrying higher functionality like camera, radio, internet connection e.t.c

Telecommunications: The weak segments of the industry

The telecommunications industry which ought to be a level playing ground for all operators in the various segments namely, Global System Mobile (G.S.M), Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and the strictly Internet Service Providers (ISPs) has left some smiling to the bank having all the subscribers while others struggle for survival and are on the verge of dissolution.
Out of  24 registered telecommunications companies in the country, only 17 are currently operational. And there is the likelihood that is figure would reduce with time.
The Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) operators and the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are at the receiving end of this challenge. Though the Global System Mobile (G.S.M) operators have their own peculiar challenges, they have succeeded in harnessing their resources, investing in infrastructural development to meet up with changing technological trends of the world. This has brought about improved quality of service which is what attracts would be subscribers to any service provider. Subscribers would always build trust and patronize any provider with superior service delivery. This is the main edge the Global System Mobile (G.S.M) operators have over their Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) counterpart. They strive with vigor to improve the quality of service (QoS) delivered to their teaming subscribers and this has continued to earn them more subscribers.
Unless the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) operators and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) rise up to this challenge, upgrading their infrastructure to world standard, many more would still fizzle out in no time.
