ICT's Contribution to Nation and Capacity Building

Embracing Information and Communication Technology has definitely made life easier for Nigerians and made us a better people. Now, we can do a whole lot of things and communicate with the outside world from the comfort of our homes.
Since the creation of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) ministry, there had been tremendous awareness about the benefits of ICT in the country.
In 2014, statistics showed that ICT contributed about 25% increase to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the nation.
ICT in my opinion is broadly classified into two namely: the computer digital world and telecommunications. The computer digital branch of ICT is known for it vastness in nature because of its dynamism.Programming, Applications development, System engineering, Software engineering, Networking, Web applications and online businesses such as Blogging, Freelancer, Affialate marketing, Bulk Sms, Web design e.t.c are some well known areas of Computer ICT world.
Telecommunications basically has two distinct parts namely: voice communications and data communications. Telecommunications started with voice communications and now there is a drastic shift from voice communications to data communications. Data communications has shown and proved to be the future of telecommunications because it goes side by side with computer ICT world.
Today, the demand for data communications has increased and most telecoms companies are investing into it in order not to be left behind.
The telecommunications industry has really helped in nation and capacity building. Creating numerous jobs for Nigerians and also given opportunity for self employment and entrepreneurship through sales of various mobile phones, Sim pack, recharge cards, recharge card printing and marketing e.t.c.
The telecommunications industry in Nigeria is said to be worth about 21 billion dollars and is still growing everyday. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) adjudged Nigeria as the largest telecommunications market in Africa despite the thorny business terrain of the country. This has contributed immensely to nation and capacity building enabling job and wealth creation.
The ICT sector has been referred to by many as a Goldmine yet to be explored because of its vastness. ICT opportunities continue to present itself to those who are ready to take advantage of it. Many have become online entrepreneurs owning websites and online stores where people can shop and carry out online transactions.
Government's commitment to deploying broadband connection to every cities and communities in the country will further strengthen the impact of ICT to nation and capacity building. More and more jobs and self employment opportunities would be created when this project finally becomes a reality reducing the worrisome situation of unemployment in the country.
