My article, Nigeria needs at least one multinational phone manufacturing company has finally reached the appropriate quarters as Nokia plans to establish a phone and accessories manufacturing plant in Nigeria. This development is coming at a time when the government in place is encouraging patronage of made in Nigeria goods. Even the Nigeria Senate has clearly shown leadership by example by purchasing made in Nigeria cars for its members.
Nigeria, being the largest economy in Africa and the most populous country in Africa represent an entity with a quality that no investor in the world can ignore. The synergy of big population and big economy makes Nigeria a good business domain, a fertile ground and a huge market for any telecommunications company irrespective of whether they are manufacturers or service providers.
The telecommunications industry in Nigeria is still developing and providers immense business opportunities for any company that plunges into it. Though the business terrain in Nigeria is full of thorns couple with the Nigerian factors such as poor electricity supply, insecurity e.t.c, a telecommunications firm with the right orientation would definitely thrive
Nokia on sensing this, has taking lead to set up a company in Nigeria. Motorolla is also thinking of doing something similar for phones and accessories assembly.
With these two companies breaking the supposedly jinx preventing foreign phone manufacturing in Nigeria, many other phone manufacturing companies like Samsung, LG, Lenovo, Apple, Blackberry would follow suit.
When these companies begin full operation, the effect on the nations economy in terms of wealth and job creation cannot be over emphasized.
