Why Nigerians go as low as sending their children to Universities in Benin Republic(Cotonou)

Most Nigerian parents now prefer to send their children abroad for university education because of fallen standards of educational system in the country. They lack thrust and confidence in what universities in the country have to offer their children. The issue of incessant strike actions by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which disrupts the entire school calendar and prolongs the duration of study of the students also contributed immensely to why parents take the decision to send their children abroad to school. More so, preference of foreign graduates to local graduates in the labour market also contributed to this mad rush for foreign education by Nigerians. The quest is so severe that Nigerian parents now go as low as sending the children to university in nearby Benin Republic. The population of Nigerians schooling in Benin Republic is quite alarming.
Never in the history of JAMB has it registered up to 1.5 million candidates for its UTME exercise. The late commencement of registration resulted in several irregularities. Many candidates are likely to miss their exam because up till now they are yet to know their exam centers. Probably it is part of JAMB’S game plan slash the number of candidates to its barest minimum because universities in the country can only admit a quarter of them. This therefore means the remaining three-quarter candidates would have to seek admission somewhere else, probably in other countries.
Despite the fallen standards of education in Nigeria coupled with the fact that no Nigerian university is occupying a good position in world ranking, some Nigerian universities are still worth patronizing. They are:

1. University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos state

2. Covenant University, Otta, Ogun state

3. Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife, Osun state

4. Babcock University, Iperu, Ogun state

5. University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Oyo state

6. Nigeria American University, Yola Adamawa state
