The merger between Facebook and Eutelsat to provide satellite broadband internet connectivity in 48 Sub-Saharan African countries, Nigeria inclusive would go a long way to strengthen internet service delivery in the continent.
ISPs Infrastructural Development: It is obvious that internet service delivery is not yet at its optimal level in Nigeria. There is the need to upgrade, supplement and boost the infrastructure already on ground. There are about 10 ISP companies currently operating in the country. There harnessed resources combined is still not sufficient to cater for the internet requirement of the country.
Facebook and Eutelsat coming into the scene is a laudable development. It would bring about competition and existing ISPs would be forced to upgrade their infrastructure if they are to remain in the market.
What Nigerians Expect: When this merger is fully implemented, Nigerians are optimistic that it would bring about better internet experience and faster connectivity. That the cost of bandwidth would crash with numerous flexible data plan at cheap and affordable prices. Nigerians are hopeful that Facebook and Eutelsat would bring back the era of unlimited data plan at minimal cost. Also they expect provisions for business friendly data plans for online business owners. This are very vital areas that indigenous ISPs have not done too well. Facebook and Eutelsat could take up this opportunity to launch a great entry into the market giving their competitors a run for their money.
