It is said that, "make hay while the sun shines." While other telecommunications operators in the country made hay and complied with the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) directive to deactivate all pre-registered SIM cards, MTN felt it was above the law and never acted on the directive.
Now that the long arm of the law has caught up with them, they are now running helter skelter to do what is right. This has brought about untold pressure on them, stressing and frustrating affected subscribers. Angry subscribers whose lines have been barred flock in their multitudes to the nearest MTN office to get their SIMS re-registered. Some arrive as early as 6.00am and don't get to leave until nightfall. Many had to return repeated times leaving their businesses and jobs unattended to before scaling through. Those who could not withstand the rigor and stress abandoned MTN for other networks.
The most hit by this situation are business owners whose businesses are dependent on calls and they have MTN as their hotlines. The damage to their businesses cannot be quantified. From loss of customers to loss of income in addition to psychological effect that it brings to the entrepreneur cannot be ignored.
Considering what Nigerians have been through as a result of MTN's negligence and stubbornness, then they must not go unpunished.
All their effort to fight it out in court would not work. They have been advised by the minister to drop all lawsuit. Amicable settlement out of court could attract pity from the government and justice upon them is tempered with mercy.
