The opportunities are still there for Nigeria to become one of the phone manufacturing, assembly and exporting countries of the world only and only if she could put her house in order and harness her resources such as infrastructural capacity building, technological capabilities and institutional strength.
It is on record that an average of 4 million handsets of various shapes, sizes and configurations are imported into the country monthly. If we could start manufacturing these phones in the country, we would be gaining a whooping NGN34 billion monthly and this figure can be surpassed through foreign exchange earnings from phone exportation.
None of the multinational phone manufacturing and assembly companies like Nokia, Tecno, LG, Blackberry, Samsung has even an assembly plant in the country. With a population of over 170 million, these companies see Nigeria as a fertile ground for their businesses and are willing to invest in the country provided we put essentials in place such as electricity, good road networks, low tax rate, security e.t.c.
Despite the fact that Solo and Fero phones are indigenous phone assembly companies presently operating in the country, Nigerians still yearn for the international brands to create a healthy competition with the local brands.
The presence of these multinational phone manufacturing companies in the country would not only boost the nation's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), it would also serve as an avenue for wealth and job creation for our teaming population of unemployed youths.
