Earlier this week, the long arm of the law caught up with telecommunications giant MTN for failure to deactivate unregistered SIM cards as directed by the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC).
It would be recall that earlier in August, the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) announced a deadline to all telecommunications companies to deactivate all unregistered SIM cards on their network. Other telecommunications companies like Etisalat, Globacom, Airtel e.t.c complied with the directive. Some even went ahead to deactivate affected subscriber's line without prior notice.
MTN failed to comply with Nigeria Communications Commission's (NCC's) directives and has been fined 5.2billion dollars as punishment.
MTN confirmed that it is already discussing with the Nigeria Communications Commision (NCC) on the development and would relate to the public in a press statement very soon about the outcome of their discussion.
This development has affected MTN's shares in the market. MTN's shares dropped drastically, closing 12.49% lower at 167 rand.
This serves as a warning to all telecommunications operators in the country and other individuals or corporate bodies that may want to take the government for granted. It is no longer business as usual. Gone are the days when people take government directives with levity. The government of President Muhammadu Buhari is a no nonsense government and should not be taking for granted by anybody at all.
