MTN's fine becomes tighter

One of the greatest shortcomings of past administrations was that they were unable to enforce the law. Even after pronouncing verdict on an individual or company, things remain indifferent because nobody to enforce the law or perhaps the law enforcement agency in charge of such pronouncement are very weak from the top that they cannot even hurt a fly.
The government in place now is doing its possible best to ensure that the law is enforced and offenders found guilty are brought to book.
Despite the fact that MTN's shares dropped by 20% in the stock market after the pronoucement of the fine by the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) and the management of MTN have been dialoguing with them on the way forward, the Nigeria Communications Commision says no going back on its directive. It has gone ahead to pronounce a two week ultmatum on MTN to comply with the directive and pay the fine or face greater penalty.
Unregistered SIM cards as it were, were being used by evil minded people to carry out nefarious act which poses severe security treats to life and properties. This was the main reason the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) ordered the deactivation of this lines.
Consequences of this development on MTN
  •  As earlier mentioned, the shares of MTN dropped drastically in the stock market after the pronouncement of the $5.2 billion fine on them by Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC).
  • Payment of this fine would definitely affect the stability of the company wiping out more than two years of MTN's annual profit.
  • This fine could affect the renewal of MTN's licenses which is due for renewal in 2016, outright revoking of their licenses is a huge possibility.
Reactions from concerned individuals
Some people are of the notion that the fine could scare away would be investors because they will regard Nigeria as an unfriendly nation and place for foreign capital while others said it was a good step in the right direction and this development would definitely boost the country's image rather than damage it.
