The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhamadu Buhari would be meeting with his South African counterpart, Jacobs Zuma to discuss the recent fine of 5.2 billion dollars by the Nigeria Communications Comission (NCC) on MTN Nigeria.
This issue is suppose to be left solely for the operator and regulator to resolve and the president need not be involved. Or why do we have the NCC?
The violation has occurred and punishment meted on to MTN. Let them face the wrath of the law. There are more pressing issues that need the President's attention other than a fine meted to a mere company operating in the country.
This intervention by the President clearly shows the institutional weakness of the country and should be frowned at with vigor.
If it were to be a Nigerian company operating abroad that fell victim of such a fine, you think the President of that country would intervene? Rather, he would even assist to intensify case and make sure the company is brought to book not minding the aftermath of such verdict on the company. It would be a thing of joy for them seeing a Nigerian company go down.
Ensuring that MTN pays this fine would definitely serve as an example to all other telecoms operators in the country that it is no longer business as usual. They cannot continue to make huge profits from the country whilist poor service delivery to subscribers and still disobey government directives. That is the height of irresponsibility and should not be encouraged at all.
Granting MTN a waiver would definitely send wrong signals to other telecoms operators that they can actually get away with irregular acts despite government's verdict. This would definitely tarnish the image of the country internationally.
