The principle of operation of a Global System for
Mobile communications (G.SM) network is quite different from the principle of
operation of a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network in every aspect. So
when a G.S.M operator like MTN now acquires a CDMA operator like Visafone,
there are bound to be problems.
The inability of MTN to continue to run visafone
as a solely CDMA network has brought
about chains of problems, leaving loyal Visafone customers to suffer poor
service delivery. At first, they rendered the Visafone network useless and
inactive, stopped the production of Visafone recharge cards and then called for
the conversion of all Visafone CDMA lines to MTN G.S.M lines. This conversion
process was tagged “Migration from Visafone to MTN.”
This Migration exercise has re-opened another round
of stress for Visafone subscribers because it has been characterized by
hitches, setbacks and delays of all kinds. A typical migration outlet is over
crowded with people waiting patiently to get their migration done. Sometimes, it might take the all day before
it gets to particular customers turn while those unattended to have no choice
but to return the next day.
Uptill now MTN does not have the technical know how
to convert some categories of Visafone lines to G.S.M lines. Visafone on
inception ran a completely SIMless based telecommunications technology, most
especially on their data network. They sold fixed lines to their data
subscribers. These fixed lines are SIMless. Converting these fixed lines to
G.S.M lines has been a big challenge and a herculean task for MTN. Infact MTN
does not at present have the capacity to convert these fixed Visafone lines to
G.S.M lines.
Affected subscribers are asked to hold on and be
patient. But for how long? This has caused many to abandon Visafone for other
networks. It is obvious that before the end of this migration exercise, MTN
would have lost at least a quarter of Visafone subscribers. The losses,
incompetence, disappointment, stress e.t.c has just been too much.
